Magennis ‘full of confidence’ after Exeter move

Josh Magennis celebrates his goal for Exeter City

Northern Ireland striker Josh Magennis says he is “full of confidence” after a strong pre-season with his new club Exeter City.

The 33-year-old has scored five times in City’s friendlies ahead of their League One opener against Rotherham United on Saturday.

Magennis, who has 79 caps for his country, signed a one-year contract at St James Park in June after leaving Wigan Athletic.

“It’s been fantastic but the curtain comes down on Saturday against Rotherham so if I had scored no goals in pre-season and one goal each in the first five games, it would have been even better,” he told BBC Radio Devon.

“But I am full of confidence, we know that opportunities will arise and I am fully convinced that not only me, but also everyone else, will be able to seize theirs when they arise.”

Magennis still has big ambitions for both Northern Ireland and Exeter, 15 years after making his English Football League debut for Cardiff City.

“My goal, since I was able to get fit and reach over 70 caps, was to get as close as possible to 100,” he said of his international ambitions.

“I think for every striker the minimum number of goals they’re trying to score is in double digits.

“I’ve managed to do that over the last few seasons which has been good. I’m looking to replicate that this season and the seasons I’m here at Exeter.

“I came here to bring much more than goals, but I hope that the goals I score are valued and that they help us go far.”
